Digitisation, Digitalisation, & Digital Transformation
What’s the difference between
digitisation, digitalisation, and digital transformation?
Digitisation
Digitisation is the process of converting information into a digital format.
Not so long ago, organisations used to hold all of their records in paper or photo form. These documents tended to be handwritten, typed or were physical images. This of course made it hard for data to be readily accessed, shared or analysed. Processes were slow and efficient. Decision making was difficult without knowing what the up-to-date information was.
Computers then came along and most business start converting basic records into digital computer files. This process is called Digitisation > converting hard records into digital records.
Digitalisation
Digitalisation is the art of converting a legacy process by using technology and digitalised data. Digitalisation will drive improvements by simplifying the process for users, creating significant time efficiencies and changing the way employees and organisations interact with each other and their customers.
Digitalisation cannot happen without Digitisation.
Digital Transformation
Digital Transformation is the adoption of digital technology to dramatically accelerate business performance, efficiency, and competency, whilst fully leveraging all the changes and opportunities that are unlocked by digital technology.
It could be said therefore:
Digitisation + Digitalisation + Digital Strategy = Digital Transformation.
